BS Molecular Biology

Introduction

BS in Molecular Biology covers a vast study of structure and functions of living cells at a molecular level along with the knowledge of combination of genetic, genomic and microbial techniques to produce products and treatments in industrial, medical and agricultural settings

After studying Molecular Biology, a graduate can take up many avenues such as medical laboratory testing, advanced biotechnology research and investigations conducted by National and International Biotechnological companies and University level teaching and research. Moreover, this degree serves as a stepping stone for further studies and clinical research, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and genetics.

Objectives

  • To outline the structure of the biomolecules found in all living organisms.
  • To explain the process of cell division in both somatic and germ cells and the understanding of molecular cloning and genetic manipulation techniques central to the study of organisms
  • To equip the students with investigative skills for the processes that occur within and between cells, including genetic processes, the way cells carry nutrients, and how diseases attack healthy cells.
  • To teach the use of advanced tools and techniques for separation, manipulation, imaging and analysis.

Career Path

Some of the career paths a Molecular Biology graduate can take up after completing degree are outlined below;
  • Environmental Biologists
  • Agricultural scientists
  • Biomedical researcher.
  • Drugs and vaccines developing scientists
  • Geneticist
  • Genetic Engineer
  • Industry scientists
  • Bioinformatician
  • Instructor (college or University)
  • Toxicologists
  • Virologists
A Molecular Biologists can take up, these careers in colleges, universities, diagnostic and quality testing labs, agricultural and wildlife industries, hospitals and health care agencies, industrial and manufacturing companies, pharmaceutical companies, public and private research fields (agricultural, chemical and environmental), technical supply companies, water testing and treatment organizations
